Massamba's band

MASSAMBA DIOP treated us to another suprise at his house on the last day of our visit. He has formed his own band now, in addition to playing with Baaba Maal and working with Tony, and they played for all of us that night. The players in the band were MASSAMBA and two other rockin' tama players, Massamba's brother, ABDOULIYE DIOP playing the harmonica and percussion, and NDONGO DIOP playing sabar and djembe. They were so much fun! Here's two samples, one a bit quieter and dreamy with harmonica and tamas, the other more of a party tune. Just try to sit still.

When Jason went to Casamance with Moise, he got to see the artisans at work MAKING DJEMBE DRUMS. Click here to see a photo gallery that shows you all the steps from hollowing out a solid log, to carving and sanding the outer design of the drum, to using rings to stretch goat skin on the playing surface, to taking your drum to the beach for a jam.

Tony in studio

Back home, Tony went to work in the studio, using the music that we recorded in Senegal and blending it with percussion tracks of his own composition. Click here to download the first finished track, "Dakar Calling." The solo vocalist is Abdourakhmane Diallo.
